Emergency and Exit Light Testing

Your emergency exit signs need to be submitted for a series of tests to ensure accordance with AS/NZS2293. According to the Building Code of Australia, an emergency lighting system must be installed on every level of a building where a storey has a floor space of more than 300m2. The system must be installed in every hallway that is part of an evacuation path, or in any room that has a floor space more than 100m2 that does not open to a hallway

Testing - Emergency Lighting

Testing to the AS2293.2 standard for emergency lighting testing & inspection, all emergency luminaries and exit signs need to be inspected at 6-monthly intervals. During the inspection, Firetech will test the lamps and replace any defective lights. Each device will also According to the Building Code of Australia, an emergency lighting system must be installed on every level of a building where a storey has a floor space of more than 300m2

undergo a discharge test in which a technician will turn the battery charger off and simulate a power outage for a duration of 90 minutes. The test will continue until every emergency light or exit sign is tested.

Your lighting system should receive another test every 12 months with all the same procedures as the 6-monthly test, plus the inspection and cleaning of fittings and reflective surfaces. Without a formal discharge test, you could be unaware of potential power failures in your system. A trained technician will be able to identify any faults in your lighting through thorough inspection and compliance with the current safety standards.

Your emergency exit signs need to be submitted for a series of tests to ensure accordance with AS/NZS2293. To complete this test Firetech will need to conduct:

  • A duration test to see how the emergency exit sign performs through a series of charge and discharge cycles at low and high temperatures.

  • A photometric test to ensure the light output is sufficient for a particular space.

  • A format, luminance and colour test

Other tests that will be performed include:

  • Inspecting all bulbs and lights and replacing as required

  • Inspecting all diffusers and batteries and making sure that any defective diffusers or batteries have been replaced

  • Cleaning lights to ensure light output isn’t dimmed by dirt and dust

  • Ensuring that signs and the distance between emergency lighting is in compliance with current safety standards

  • Providing documentation of all tests to ensure the business owner is aware of when testing needs to be arranged. This documentation can also be used to prove compliance to authorities.
